The Masters

What a week! As many of you know I have just returned from my annual pilgrimage to the US Masters in Augusta, and once again this year the tournament did not disappoint. First of all we can celebrate our first English Masters Champion since Nick Faldo in 1996. Some of you too can celebrate in our Masters sweepstake.

This years winners were...

- 1st Place: Shona Wilson - £65
- 2nd: Liz Coates & Robert Came - £22.50 Each
- 3rd: Peter Barnwell & Sally Rossiter - £3 Each

- Last Place Before Cut: Robin Hart - £5
- Last Place After Cut: David Pike - £5
- Round 1 Leader: Robert Came - £5
- First Hole in One: David Wadey - £5
- Lowest Round: Robert Came - £5
- Highest Round: Ian Neal - £5

I love the post Masters chat at the Club as this tournament truly inspires all of us as golfers. One of the talking points was Bryson Dechambeau's Clubs. He was certainly one of the more interesting characters to come out of this years Masters. Not because of his quirky dress sense, but more his interesting array of clubs. Whilst not many people would go to such extremes, Dechambeau actually used clubs which were ALL 7 iron length. An interesting Custom Fitting option!

There is also a lesson to be learned from the weekends play. Lee Westwood and Jordan Spieth were both tied 2nd in the tournament. Both had 286 shots over the same 72 holes and 4 days. So why was Lee Westwood pleased with his performance come Sunday evening and Spieth devastated? The answer is in expectation based on what they "claimed" in advance. The media and pundits always adopt the stance of "It's Spieth's to lose" which is nonsense but does leave the player in danger of believing this. Spieth allowed himself to think he owned the Masters title before he did, and then felt a sense of loss when it was taken away. Rather like your lottery numbers coming up the week you forget to buy a ticket. Your financial situation is the same as last week but you feel much worse about it. Westwood never "Claimed" the Masters and therefore felt no loss at the end.

Therefore, be careful what you claim halfway round your next game. You are not "3 under after nine." That is an illusion based on the assumption that you will par the next 9 holes. Think about it, why should the golfer who birdies the first 3 holes and bogeys the last 3 feel worse than the guy who bogeys the first 3 and birdies the last 3? It's the same round of golf. The only difference is what they claimed as their score halfway round. One ended up better off than he thought he would be and one worse off, yet they were both the same.

Most of the conversation I have heard this week has been around Spieth's 7 on the 12th and Els' putting on the first. Why are golfers so compelled to focus on the worst thing that happened? What good does it do? Spieth birdied the 13th having dropped 6 shots in 3 holes to lose the lead. This shows tremendous strength of character. Els played the 9 holes after his 9 on the first in level par. Why not focus on that? The simple fact is you will not build confidence in your game by focussing on what went wrong. If you think confidence is important in golf then it's time to start thinking about the things you did well.

Something for you all to think about the next time you are out playing....
