Welcome to this weeks newsletter. If any of you read the Kingsbridge Gazette you will have seen the headlines of 'Thurlestone Juniors dominate the headlines..again' and we are happy to say they are, again.
We would like to tell you about Noah Mulligan, one of our Junior stars who has emerged from our Thurlestone Junior Academy. Noah started in the Junior Academy when he was 5 years old and within the last 2 1/2 years has dedicated a huge amount of time practicing, playing and coming regularly to our Academy lessons. This year, Noah has reduced his handicap from 45 to 29 with his goal of getting a CONGU handicap of 28 before the end of the year already only 1 shot away.
As well as the Junior Club Nights and Junior Competitions, Noah has been playing in a few regional and National Competitions all over the country. Recently, Noah won the Non-Congu section of the Falmouth Junior Open with 28 points over 9 holes.
Last weekend, after 1 hours Junior Academy coaching and the 3 hours of Devon Futures Coaching, Noah travelled up to Essex to a course called Three Rivers to play in a 'Wee Wonders' 9 Hole competition. Noah won with a fantastic gross score of 32! Only 1 over par the Par 31 course.
Noah has now qualified through to the regional final at Hoebridge in July where the top 3 in each age group will qualify for the Wee Wonders grand final at St Andrews.
I think you will join me in wishing Noah well in the next round.
It goes without saying that we are getting a very good reputation with our Juniors here at Thurlestone and the support we get from members and parents is fantastic- thank you!
Wouldn't it be great if we had an 'Open Winner' here at Thurlestone....Jack and I firmly believe that we have 3 or 4 juniors who might just be able to do it!!
Talking of Open winners, American Dustin Johnson finally broke his major duck when landing the US Open. A deserved winner, despite a controversial ruling decision which threatened to over shadow the tournament. Thankfully the one shot penalty he occurred mattered little at the end. It was only a few years ago he was penalised two shots on the 72nd hole for grounding his club in waste land, which was treated as a hazard and last year 3 putting the final hole from 12 feet to miss out by a single stroke. With his long, accurate driving and impressive ball striking, the major champion must be a good bet for our own British Open later in July.
