Welcome to this weeks newsletter.
You may remember a couple of weeks back we asked for volunteers to try a few of the new products and give us some honest reviews of what they thought of the clubs we stock here in the Proshop. We had an excellent response to this email and it was great to see people interested in the new products. We are proud to announce Stewart Barnes was our first tester in.
Stuart, who has a handicap of 6, had recently changed irons to Titleist AP2 clubs. These are a smaller forged players cavity, so it would be interesting to see how our clubs faired against his own!
We tried the latest offerings from PING, Callaway and Cobra to see which would work best and give a similar feel and look to his current clubs. All irons were built to the same specifications as Stewart's current irons to give as fair of a test as possible.
- Current Set: Titleist AP2, Standard Loft/Length/Lie.
- 7 Iron Distance: 160yd - Small Draw
First up we tried the Callaway XR Iron. Whilst the iron outperformed distance wise, the dispersion was not as tight as his current iron. Overall, Stewart found the cast Callaway iron to feel a little firmer, chunkier and heavier than his current Titleist offering.
Next we tried two different offerings from PING. The I Series and G Series irons. The I Series being a slightly smaller head, more like his Titleist, Stewart instantly warmed to this iron, however it was the G Series which was the surprise package.
The extra forgiveness and 'I' technology not only gave him an extra 5 yards, it was also noticeably straighter. The feel was good even from a slightly larger head. Not really surprising this has been out best selling iron this year!
The final offering was from Cobra. The Cobra was probably the closest we could get to Stewart's current clubs, a smaller forged cavity but with a little added technology within the face. Of course, Stewart liked the look of this iron and the added technology also added a couple of yards to his average.
The great thing about this testing was that all irons produced different results, this means we have the ability to fit all different types of golfers and handicaps. Each iron also performed well giving distance gains with most. The PING G Series iron unsurprisingly came out on top, giving a great combination of both look, feel and performance! I really do believe PING have created a winner with this club!
If you would like to come in and try some irons for yourself we would be happy to assist. Alternatively, if there is a specific iron you would like to try we can build anything up to your spec to take on the course or practice ground!

More success for Thurlestone Juniors! Following on from our newsletter last week, I am happy to announce yet more success for our thriving Junior section.
With Juniors in action all over Devon we must first turn our attention to Junior Captain,
George Holland. This weekend was the Thurlestone Hotel Cup, with the weather and course both in excellent shape, we were set for some fine scoring.
George Holland and
Ethan Bellamy both lead the way after the morning round with outstanding scores of 41 and 42 points respectively. Sadly however,
Ethan learnt a valuable lesson having not signed his second round card and found himself disqualified!
George carried on his fine form from the morning, carding another solid 41 points in order to take the Cup and win by 4 shots over previous Junior Captain
Rob Came.
George attributed his success down to some fine putting, having recently changed putter to a Odyssey White Hot RX putter. Clearly a worthy investment having reduced his handicap by 2.6 shots down to 5.5. Congratulations
George!
Also in action on the weekend were rising stars
George Messias and
Noah Mulligan, both of which made appearances at the Royal North Devon Junior Open. With some testing conditions and the course playing at full length,
George managed a very respectable 33 points.
Noah was playing in the younger category over 9 holes and carded an incredible 22 points winning his age group by 6 points! A superb effort around a very challenging and different course to what he is used to here at Thurlestone.
Congratulations to all involved!
