Welcome to this weeks newsletter. Hopefully most of you will be reading this from in and around Thurlestone this week? There is a real buzz around the Club with lots of golf and Tennis being played in some fine weather.

 

Last Sunday saw the West Devon Junior League Adult/Junior foursomes, played at Staddon Heights. Representing Thurlestone were the pairings of Mark Chapman/Charlie Evans and Nigel Whelan/Finn Whelan. Both pairs played well but sadly just lost out to the first place Staddon team only to be beaten on count back and therefore came second. Well done guys.

After an unbeaten run in the league, Thurlestone Junior team attended the West Devon Junior League finals day at Stover last Monday as one of the favourites. 

The Thurlestone Team had to play our neighbours Bigbury Golf Club in the Semi Final morning round. It was a very close match ending in a 2 1/2 - 2 1/2 draw. 

This meant that the match was to be decided by a sudden death playoff between the two captains who proceeded to hit two great drives down the middle of the first fairway. George Holland then hit an incredible approach shot, which was going straight at the flag only to get a hard bounce and finish at the back of the green, leaving a difficult two putt for a draw. His opponent then managed to get his ball to hold on the green and nudged his putt cleverly close to close out the hole and the match in Bigbury’s favour.

With the disappointment of the morning result the Team had to re-group and go out again in the afternoon to play off for the 3rd and 4th placings against Tavistock Golf Club. This too was a very closely fought match with the Thurlestone Team finishing strong to see off the Tavistock Team by 3 matches to 2. 

Well done to all the Thurlestone Juniors who took part.


Yarrow Putting Competition 

As you can see from the picture opposite it was a beautiful afternoon for the Yarrow Cup which is a Junior Putting Competition open to all. Norman and Carol Yarrow did a great job organising all the kids in this fun competition. 

Each Junior played 4 lots of 9 holes around the putting Green with their best 9 hole score being selected. Olly Walker was triumphant for the under 18’s with and amazing score of 13 putts. The Under 11’s winner was Toby White and the Girls winner was Ellie Bewes.
