Welcome to this weeks newsletter. Over the past few months I have been scouring the country for a new Assistant Professional to join our Proshop team here at Thurlestone. I have had many applications from all over the country and after much deliberation I think I have made 'another', as Jack would say, excellent choice.

Glenn Oakes has been the Head Assistant at Torquay Golf Club and has had good success with the schools and Junior Academy over there. Glenn (27) has been fully PGA qualified for 3 years and has an excellent reputation for his coaching and custom fitting. Glenn is really enthusiastic about joining our team and already has an excellent understanding of our tee time system, my EPOS system and my GC2 system. This is great news for me as he should be able to 'hit the ground running'!! Glenn will be starting with us on Saturday, 1 April. So pop into the shop over Easter and say hello.


Introducing Glenn Oakes

My first serious golf started when I became a member of Drayton Park Golf Club where our successful junior team won a couple of county competitions, just what you would expect from a team of five which consisted of three future PGA Pro's and one future European Tour player. At 16 I moved to North Oxford Golf Club where I played for the men's scratch side winning the county knockout cup, as well as winning a number of junior competitions and making the Oxfordshire County team going unbeaten for two years.

At this time I was working part-time at a driving range and when my boss took the Pro's job at Bicester GC I joined him as his assistant and commenced my PGA training. My first task there was to build up the junior section, which resulted in me coaching the team to two county competition wins.

During my PGA training I found a love for coaching the short game and putting and have been lucky enough to have been taught methods by world renowned coach Dr Paul Hurrion (Coach to Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington and David Howell).

For my last couple of years in Oxford I had the opportunity to share my work between Bicester and North Oxford GC but when my boss at Bicester went full time as a caddie on the European Tour I decided it was time to spread my wings and relocated in Devon where I became the Assistant Professional at Torquay Golf Club. I have spent the past 2 1/2 years actively working to get more people into Golf and have ran some successful open days resulting in new Golfers and members for the club, as well as getting Golf into local schools and building a Junior Academy at the Club which has seen the number of Junior Golfers rapidly increase.

I am now very excited to join Steve, Jack and the team. I feel extremely lucky to have this opportunity at Thurlestone Golf Club where I feel we all share the same ideas/goals to continue increasing the amount of people (of all ages) getting in to Golf. As well as coaching I enjoy custom club fitting and with the fantastic facilities at the club I will continue to offer a first class service to all members and help all with their game in any way I can. Whether it be a lesson, club fit or simply a chat in the Shop.
