Welcome to this week's newsletter.
It's been a while since we have had a news round up of the Thurlestone Junior's and with recent events that our Juniors have been involved in, it would seem like there is no time like the present!
For those of you who play regularly here at the Club will know that our Junior section is becoming a force to be reckoned with. Indeed in a recent conversation I had with Devon County officials suggested that we are well and truly on the Devon County Junior 'Map'. We have 3 Juniors in the Devon Boys U14's squad, 2 in the Boys U16's, 1 in the Boys U18's squad and a girl in the U16's Girls squad. We have 11 Juniors who have been selected for Devon Future's and Future's Elite Coaching which in due course will hopefully move them into the Devon squads.
In the past week Alfie Messias travelled to Cornwall and came Runner Up in the Looe Junior Open with an impressive 39 points on tricky greens.
Lucas Bellamy and Oliver Griffiths came first and second respectively in Division 2 of the Mens Medal at the weekend with amazing scores of Nett 63's with Lucas just beating Oli on count back. Also this weekend, Toby White won the Links Hotel Challenge Bowl with rounds of Nett 71 and Nett 66 (138) narrowly beating Mark Drew on count back who scored Nett 68 and Nett 69 (138). Alfie Messias topped off a great weeks golf with a third place scoring a Nett 74 and Nett 66 (140). As you can imagine lots of handicap reductions for all of these boys.
All this recent success doesn't happen by accident, the effort that the Juniors are putting in is inspiring. Some of the Juniors have been coming down before school to practice before catching the school bus at 8.10am. They have also agreed with the bus driver 'an additional stop' at the Golf Club on their way home from school.
The Thurlestone Junior Academy started again last Saturday with nearly 40 children attending in our 6 sessions.
We have children aged from 5 to 14 years old and we are pleased to say that we have now got an 'All Girls' Group which we are excited about as we have some really talented girls in this group.
The Junior Committee would like to appeal to anyone who would like to sponsor a Junior competition in 2017.
The committee have doubled the amount of competitions in 2017 for the Juniors to play in and are appealing for a donation of
£30 which will be paid in prizes to the Congu and Non-Congu players at the end of each Competition.
If you would like to make a donation to the Junior Competition fund please call into the Proshop or Office. The Committee would like to thank all those who have already sponsored a Junior Competition this year so far.
We're not calling you insane, but…
Hopefully you're all starting to enjoy a bit more golf now that we're into spring, the weather's improved and the days are longer.
The season is well underway here but is your game ready?
Einstein once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again whilst expecting a different result. If you want to enjoy a better year on the golf course in 2017 it's important that you're not making the same mistakes as you did last year. This could be anything from a part of your game that you're really struggling with to using ill-fitted equipment that isn't suited to your swing.
Whatever it is, we're here to help. We have a team of highly trained PGA professionals within the shop who can help you to enjoy better golf and maybe even get your name on one of the boards this year.
