This week's email recaps a busy few days of competitions, we take a look at a simple way to bridge the gap between your long irons and woods, whilst our video of the week focuses on Rickie Fowler's warm-up routine - how similar is yours to his? Round up

Typically, this time each year following the Men’s, Seniors and Juniors Club Championships I write congratulating each of the winners of their respective sections on their brilliant play in the Tournament that every member should be aspiring to win.

Well I most certainly will be congratulating the winners, not necessarily on their excellent scoring but on the fact that they excelled in weather conditions that can only be described as horrendous! So much so that sadly the afternoon round in the Men’s Club Championships had to be abandoned due to fierce winds and rain!

The results were as follows:

The only 2 of the day was Darrell Day who won £52.50

Well done to all of the Prize Winners. You will notice that a certain Noah Mulligan’s name keeps appearing in the Winners podium and for a 9 year old lad to win both the Men’s and Junior’s Nett Club Championships I thought that he deserved a special mention.

Noah comes down to the Club every day to practice and play either before or after school and so his recent successes have not happened by accident. It was interesting to see that at the beginning of this year he aspired to be like some of the bigger boys here at the Club and having reduced his handicap from 25 to 13 in the past 12 months he now is showing some of them the way.

Well done Noah!

I remember when I was a junior and I read the following quote which inspired me to get out there and do some practice ‘Champions are made from the practice others won’t do’

Having read about Noah in the news one of our Lady members sent this amazing poem which I would like to share with you.

There was a young fellow called Noah
Who used to play a lot slower
Then he got very good
With both iron and wood
And his handicap went even lower!

It annoyed all his elderly peers
As it preyed on their very worst fears
That a callow young thing
With a fabulous swing
Could thrash the arthritic old dears!

But he modestly attempted to play
As badly as them in their day
And allowed them to win
With a kind knowing grin
And hid all his trophies away!

We truly are awash with talent here at Thurlestone, aren’t we?

How do you bridge your gap?

When you hear the term ‘gapping’ you probably think about the distances between your wedges, but it also applies to the top end of your bag too. Having a club that bridges the gap between your long irons and fairway woods is essential if you want to make the game easier for yourself.

Smaller gaps between your irons and woods means there will be fewer times you have to make shorter, easier or harder swings, which are more difficult to repeat when you are stuck between clubs. Good gapping is just one of the reasons we often fit players into one or two hybrids.

If you pop by the store we can show you some of our favourites, like the G400 hybrid or G400 Crossover. The former packs lots of power and forgiveness thanks to thinner and rear sole weight, while the latter has spin rates more like an iron for additional workability and trajectory control. Failing to prepare...

We don’t want to be the ones to say it, but we’re now in September so it’s time to start thinking about preparing yourself for the wetter months. It’d be great to see more of you on the course this winter and if you intend to play right through to next spring, a pair of waterproof shoes is a must.
