West Devon Junior League Finals Day The Thurlestone Junior team were in action again earlier this week at the West Devon Junior League Finals Day, held on an incredibly hot day at Yelverton Golf Club. The squad for the day was made up of Finn Whelan (Junior Captain), George Holland, Ethan Bellamy, Sammy Ingham, Toby White, Alfie Messias and Noah Mulligan. The semi-final was played in the morning against Tavistock Golf club and first out was George, who fought hard throughout the match only to beaten 1 down on the 19th hole. Next up was Ethan who was giving 5 shots to a really strong opponent, only to be beaten on the 16th green 3 & 2. Toby was out next and whilst he only just returned from holiday, played some exceptional golf on the front nine and impressively won his match 7 & 6. Finn, who needed a Captains performance controlled his match from the start to finally close it out on the 16th 3 & 2. This meant that it was down to the foursomes pairing of Alfie and Noah to win the match. Having to give 20 shots to their opponents this meant that this was a really big ask and after going 3 down on the turn, looked even more unlikely. With some true grit, determination and some excellent golf they dug in and from the 10th hole took control, finally winning 3 & 2, which gave Thurlestone a 3-2 victory and a place in the Final. The final was played in the afternoon against a really strong Borringdon ‘A’ team, which meant Thurlestone really needed to play to their full potential to get a positive result. George was out first and was determined to make a mark early for the team, which he proceeded to do playing some great golf and winning his match 3 & 2. Sammy was next and whilst he struggled to maintain pace with his opponent on the front nine, managed to get back to all square on the 17th only to be beaten on the last hole. Next up was Toby, having to give 6 shots, who found it hard to compete with some great golf played by his opponent and finally losing on the 16th 3 & 2. The foursomes pairing of Alfie and Noah were giving 17 shots this time and found it really hard to compete with some great play only to lose on the 14th 5 & 4. |
