| [*END*] Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter. In this week’s mail, we compare today's drivers to the big sticks of yesteryear, look at how layering has become so important out on the course and cast our eye over one of the changes to the Rules of Golf which come into effect in 2019. Enjoy the read. |
Inspired by Justin I couldn't help but be inspired this week with something US Tour Pro Justin Thomas' wrote on his Instagram/Twitter account. I'm sure all of you have heard of Justin Thomas? If not here is a quick overview of what he has achieved in the past couple of years. Last year, he won his first major, won five times and claimed the FedEx Cup. But perhaps what was more impressive was that he had almost predicted what he could achieve at the start of the year, setting what to most would have seemed like some almost impossible goals and proving self-belief is stronger than statistics. There would be no exception for this season. Thomas' season was different in that there wasn't a $10million bonus at the end of season and he didn't win a major, but he did become the World No.1, played in the Ryder Cup and still three won titles. For Thomas, setting goals is important, and he explained why. |

"Every year/season my team and I come up with goals for the year...," he wrote. "It’s something I’ve always found important. A few goals that are very attainable, some that are going to require some hard work, then some that are extremely difficult. "I ask every person in my on course team (caddie, dad, putting coach), to make their own list. This keeps us all accountable the entire year that everybody is doing what they should be doing on and off the course to make sure we are as ready as possible every time I tee it up. Time to get started on next year’s list! Sadly my list won't be quite as impressive as Justin's but I challenge you guys to make your own list of goals and see how many you can achieve!" What is on your List? On your list could be simply to play more golf, more competitive golf, reduce your handicap by a shot or two or simply upgrade your kit. If you have some golfing goals, and could do with some help achieving them, then come in and speak to myself or one of the Proshop Team and we can see how we can get you started. |
Do you need new spikes? Winter brings with it rain, which makes the ground beneath your feet softer and more slippery. If your spikes are worn or even missing, keeping a stable base during your swing will be much harder and you'll be more prone to slipping. To avoid destructive shots like these, come in-store and take advantage of our Shoe MOT promotion, where you can get new spikes fitted for half price! |

Hatton crumbles It was back to the daily grind for Europe’s Ryder Cup heroes, with Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood both in action at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Hatton led in the final round by four strokes heading into the back nine, but a remarkable collapse involving four bogies saw him card a level par 72, allowing Denmark’s Lucas Bjerregarrd to steal victory at St Andrews. Fleetwood shared second with Hatton as a final day 69 left him on 14 under, one stroke behind Bjerregarrd. This week the tour heads to Walton Heath with Justin Rose playing host at the British Masters.

Rule changes As 2019 comes ever closer, so too do the new Rules of Golf which are to be implemented on 1st January 2019. The changes being made are intended to modernise the game, one of which is the dropping procedure. Drops will no longer have to be made from shoulder height – instead, golfers will be able to drop from knee height when taking relief to simplify the dropping process and speed up play.

Sometimes it's nice to reminisce about the good times. When it comes to golf, the days of persimmon woods, small clubheads and hitting balls which were hard as a rock are long gone - but it can help to take a trip down memory lane to remind us of just how much technology has developed, particularly in the case of drivers. |

Take Mizuno for example; you might have been lucky enough to own its iconic MP-001 driver way back in 2004. The MP-001 featured a 400cc clubhead for maximum forgiveness, as well as a graphite composite crown which for the time was quite revolutionary, given the emphasis on titanium construction. It's definitely a collector's item, and is sure to be remembered with fondness. Fast-forward to the present day, and Mizuno has released its most technologically advanced driver to date in the form of GT180. The fine-tuning system means it can be tailored to your swing down to every last detail, whilst the forged SP700 TI Face results in accelerated ball speeds, making it a driver which combines distance with accuracy to an incredibly high level. So, whilst it is nice to think about your first ever driver, it's probably time to get up to speed with the latest models such as the GT180. Who knows? Maybe in another 10 years time, you'll be looking back on the GT180 with as much fondness as the MP-001! |
