An amusing one With all the new rules coming into force in 2019 I have been having a little read up and spotted this one which I thought was quite amusing. Hopefully none of you will ever have to use it but you may be able to come to the aid of someone who would otherwise be feeling a little embarrassed! Rule 6.2 So picture it, you’re playing partner has just seen you drive over the hill on our 11th hole and they have decided that they are going to launch themselves at their drive to hit it past you! |
|
Whilst trying to knock their ball beyond Burgh Island they have taken far more turf than they ought to, and the ball has trickled about an inch off the tee. Not only is there much embarrassment, and much amusement for your playing partners, but the player is also at risk of further destroying the greenkeeper’s lovely manicured teeing area with a second swipe off the deck. |
The interpretation of Rule 6.2, namely (6)/1, is coming to their rescue. It says “any time a player’s ball is inside the teeing area, the player may move the ball to another spot within the teeing area, and may play it from a tee without penalty”. So they can just pick it up, put it back on a tee, and hit the ball properly this time – remembering that it would be their second shot. Alternatively they could play it as it lies, but who wouldn't want to have another go from the tee? Just to be clear, the teeing area is classed as a “rectangle that is two club-lengths deep where the front edge is defined by the line between the forward-most points of the two tee-markers set by the committee/greenkeepers. The side edges are defined by the lines back from the outside points of the tee-markers” |

So close yet so far
It was a case of so close yet so far for Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell and Argentine team-mate Emiliano Grillo, as they finished agonizingly short in the QBE Shootout in Florida, missing out on top spot by a single stroke. The event, which follows a fourball format, was won by Americans Patton Kizzire and Brian Harman, who finished on -30 after a final round of 61. Tony Finau and the LPGA’s Lexi Thompson finished on -23. Meanwhile, it was an emotional victory for 2010 Open winner Louis Oosthuizen, as he claimed his first South African Open over the weekend – the first time the South African has won the tournament. An eagle and five birdies in his final round meant that Oosthuizen ended the tournament on -18 under – a record-equaling six shots clear of second place. England’s Oliver Wilson finished on -10, in a tie for third place. |
We all want to enjoy playing golf, and a big part of this is lowering our handicap. Yes, there will be times when your game isn't up to scratch and you go up .1 a few times in a row, but there'll also be times when all of the puzzle pieces fit and your handicap tumbles. |
What does your graph look like? As the year comes to an end, it's important to take stock and examine where you can improve your game going into the new year. There might be several areas that you want/need to work on, or maybe just two or three finer details that will take your game to the next level. |
Whatever those areas are, we're here to help. We can identify the key reasons you're not shooting the scores you want, as well as devise a personalised winter coaching plan to help iron out those faults and get you paying your best golf. So, if you want to see your handicap tumble in 2019, come down to the shop for a chat - you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. |
