Common Custom Fitting Queries “Golf clubs are too expensive and there will be a new model out next week”
This week’s newsletter is here to quash a few rumours and comments we hear regularly in the shop, bare with us! After working in the golf industry for many years I often hear comments about how often manufacturers release new clubs, if they’re actually worth it and if there really is any difference? The reality of it all? Well, it depends!
“How often should I change my clubs?”
There’s always someone who wants the latest and greatest and there’s always someone who has had the same clubs their whole golfing career, we all know one of each! The reality is that manufactures are releasing golf clubs yearly, but they really aren’t expecting you to upgrade from last years to this years. On average only 7% of golfers change driver yearly, however 43% change every four years.
“Why should I change?”
Many will not see a difference in performance year to year, however they will see a huge improvement from three or four years to the latest. Whilst the improvements in technology do compound to produce longer and straighter drivers the reality is most of it comes down to fitting. If you have never had a fitting or you have bought your driver straight off the ‘rack’ we can almost guarantee you’re giving up significant yardage! There have been some huge jumps forwards in shaft and head technology which allow for much more precise adjustments when it comes to fitting. The latest Callaway driver comes with nearly 20 different shaft options, all providing different characteristics for different players. I’m not sure I’d like to take my chances picking the right one blind!
“New drivers are expensive”
It’s true, golf club prices have increased over the past few years with many now starting over the £400 mark. That doesn’t however mean they ALL are. We have many different models in store starting from £199 and still offering fantastic performance. We’d like to think you would get a significant amount of use and enjoyment out of your driver and if you have it four years or more then it shouldn’t cost more than a couple pounds a week!
