Having been there for the last 10 years in April I can't wait to see how different Augusta National will play compared to it's usual April slot on our golfing calendar - surely there won't be Azaleas, will there?

No doubt the Augusta Members will surprise us with a magical tournament. But who will be the 2020 winner?

Augusta looms

Masters week is an exciting time for any avid golfer. It's when we get to watch our favourite golfers battle it out on one of the most iconic courses in the world. Flowers in full bloom, an array of beautiful colours, and a course in pristine condition year-after-year. Augusta National is a special place, so we thought we'd run through some of the standout Masters memories ahead of next week's showdown.

Sunday Shifts

In 1996, Greg Norman turned a six-stroke Sunday lead into a five-stroke loss to Nick Faldo. In 1978, Gary Player started the final round eight strokes behind before shooting the lowest-ever final round (64) at Augusta to claim the Green Jacket!

Fighting Spirit

Tiger’s incredible 2019 comeback win springs to mind, but Ben Hogan recovered from a terrible car crash in 1949 to win The Masters by five strokes in 1953. Ben Crenshaw’s 1995 victory came in the same week as the funeral of long-time instructor Harvey Penick. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

When the rough gets tough

If you watched the U.S. Open back in September, you will have heard plenty of talk about how much more difficult the rough was after it rained. Well, that’s not exclusive to the Majors. In fact, it’s the reality for every golfer at this time of year.

Steeper into the ball

When the long grass gets wet, it becomes tougher to cut through with your irons. There are two things that we'd recommend keeping an eye on.

In an attempt to ensure you make good contact with the back of the ball, it often helps to swing a little steeper on your downswing. The steeper approach reduces how much grass and debris you are catching before hitting the ball, which helps you strike the ball cleaner.

Chip-out vs. taking on the shot

Secondly, try to ensure your clubface remains square to the target as it can easily get tugged off-line by the grass.

The ball won’t fly as far out of the rough but it will roll more, so be wary of that when deciding where to aim. However, with all this said, sometimes it's worth taking your medicine by chipping out sideways. There's nothing worse than attempting the hero shot and leaving it in the thick stuff!
