Welcome to this weeks newsletter. We had our first ever ball fitting day here at Thurlestone Golf Club on Wednesday where we invited along a golf ball expert from Srixon to teach us how important it is to play with the correct golf balls. Over the years we have concentrated on looking at Clubs to improve length and the accuracy of our shots and perhaps over looked how much improvement there has been made in golf ball technology.
On the fitting day each player was asked to bring the golf ball that they would normally play with and their driver. Interestingly here at Thurlestone we had a real 50/50 split of golfers who always play with the same ball or didn’t really care which ball they played with! Sadly most golfers tend to play with whatever ball they lay their hands on when they dip inside the ball pocket in their golf bag. Usually this ‘lucky dip’ approach has been proved to be a poor choice of selecting the correct ball for and can also be quite costly.
One of our first testers was a lady who took the lucky dip approach. She was playing with a Molitor golf ball which is an extremely hard golf ball and if you look at this screen shot of her figures you will see that because the ball is too hard for her the the back spin rate is very low (930 rpm) and therefore the ball did not get into the air (only 5 yards high) This meant that the ball only carried through the air 79 yards on average. We swapped the lady to a Srixon Lady’s golf ball which is a much softer compression ball which spun much more (2211 rpm) This meant that the ball flew higher (10 Yards high)through the air. This increased the carry distance to 100 yards giving a gain of 21 yards carry. I think all ladies would agree that this 21 yards carry is very important on our first 2 holes here at Thurlestone.
All in all we had a very successful ball fitting day with only 1 member playing the correct golf ball for them. With all of the other customers who took part gaining at least 10+ yards and also saving money in many cases as they swapped from Pro V1’s/Z Stars etc (£43.99 per dozen)to a softer 2 piece ball (£19.99 per dozen)
If you would like to have a FREE 15 minute ball fitting in March please contact us to get you booked in.
With the Masters only a few weeks away we are running a Proshop sweepstake where you could win a voucher for £100! All you need to do is buy a square in the Proshop for £2 and we will allocate your number against a player on the start sheet on the Thursday. You have to be in it to win it.....
Have a great week
