Welcome to this week's newsletter.
The Club has been a hive of activity again over the past week, with lots of golf and tennis being played. Our young tennis stars were in action this week with the Egan Cup (ages 10-13) being played.
The winners were Olly Walker and Immy Bewes.
The Leonard Cup (ages 14-17) was also played for by the older children with Ben Recurt and Sophie Thompson coming out on top.
Both tournaments were played to a very high standard.
Both sets of winners came through a field of 24 players in each competition. They played 5 round robin matches followed by semi final and final.
Well done to Janet Richardson who, once again, has organised some fantastic tournaments over the past few weeks.
The winners of the July Cup for 10-13 year olds were Sidney Bampton on holiday from Belgium and his partner Martha Caris Bird. The winners of the Lepere Cup for 14-17 year olds were Adam Vaughan and Ellie Spark who were by chance drawn together and retained their title for the second year running.
The Woodhead Cup, an adult mixed doubles event had a smaller field than usual but Simon Slater and his younger partner Lara Wigan were worthy winners. Unfortunately rain and strong winds prevented the Thurlestone Quaich – a day long competition of Golf and Tennis from being played, but it is hoped to rearrange the event for the end of August.
The Ladies Club Championship finally found a winner after being played over two days well apart due to inclement weather. The first round was played on the 5th May in fierce winds and the second round on 3rd August on a comparatively calm day.
The Ford Salver (Nett Prize) was won by Heather Spencer with a nett 159 with Sue Curry finishing runner up with a score of 160. The Oswald Trophy (Scratch Prize) and the Thurlestone Ladies Club Champion was won, once again, by Jennifer Roberts with a Gross score of 168 with Heather Spencer as the runner-up with a score of 181. Congratulations to Jennifer who once again proved herself as a worthy Champion despite what was a very challenging first round for all the ladies who played.
Allcommers Cup
The men played the Allcommers Cup Competition at the weekend which combines our temporary members with our full members who competed in a Stableford competition.
We had a run away winner with 43 points from David Smyth who was clearly on form.
This has helped David reduce his handicap from 14 down to 12. There 4 players on 37 points, Tom Leach, Harry Blake,Martin Eyre and David Pike.
Special Congratulations must go to Graham Barker who scored a hole in one on the 6th Hole on the day.
Well done Graham.
