Welcome to this weeks newsletter.
Bill Hutchison’s Captains Day made the headlines this week at the Club on what was sadly a somewhat damp day
Spirits were not dampened however with over 100 players competing for for Bill’s Silver Quaich’s in the Individual competition. As well as the Individual Stableford, Bill incorporated a ‘Yellow Ball’ Team Competition which required some careful tactics to make full use of the individual strengths in each team.
Bill spiced up all of the Par 3’s with Subaru sponsoring some amazing prizes, from sets of clubs, holidays and even a cash prize of £10,000 were up for grabs and all you needed to do was get a hole-in-one, sadly this was not to be.
As always everyone dug deep in their pockets with the Traditonal Captains Day ‘Beat the Pro’ Competition on the 1st Hole. Jack and I were feeling particularly generous and allowed the following players to beat us on the day!
D. Day, M. Drew, A. Welsh, M. Frank, T. Burnett, P. Robinson, M. Toon, A. Whalley, W. Baker, D. Eva, D. Harwood,T. Whitehouse,G. Fountain,T. Leach & R. Leach.
As always it was Bill’s Captains Charity which was the real winner on the day with just over £900 raised for the ‘Chestnut Appeal’ which is a local charity which supports prostate cancer patients.
The Individual Prize Winners were:
Overall Winner - Sam Ingham 41 points ocb
Ladies 1st - Zoe Le Pere - 40 points
Ladies 2nd - Bridget Lafferty - 37 points
Mens 1st - David Fellows - 41points
Men’s 2nd - Hugh Leonard - 40 points
Team winners - Zoe Le Pere, Marc Le Pere, Paul Milburn Fryer, Hugh Leonar - 37 points
Thurlestone Junior Team – ‘4 Rounds of Golf in a day’
The Thurlestone Junior team met in the early hours of Saturday morning, to attempt to play a marathon of golf during what proved to be a relatively short day, in daylight terms. Whilst they met on the 1st tee, at 5am, keen to get going, they couldn’t start until light broke at 5.45am and eventually finished their challenge of ‘4 rounds of golf in a day’, in the dark some 15 hours later.
The team on the day was made up of Tom Orr (Junior Captain), George Holland, Ben Woods, Finn Whelan and Charlie Evans (with the support of George Messias, who played two rounds, Alfie Messias and numerous family members, who caddied and encouraged everyone throughout the day).
It was decided to amalgamate the Junior Summer cup competition during the day, which meant the best three scores out of the four rounds would apply. Whilst there were some great scores made by all players special note should go to Ben Woods who managed to play all four rounds of golf 15 shots under his handicap, which is likely to mean a new handicap for him!!!
The funds raised from this event will be split between the Thurlestone Junior team (to cover the cost of the new kit) and Diabetes UK, which is Tom Orr’s captain’s charity.
The the team would like to thank all of you who have sponsored them. If you would still like to sponsor the Juniors, we are collecting money on their behalf in the Pro shop.
Well done boys.
And finally if any of you are wandering around the Kingsbridge show this Saturday, please come along and say hello to Jack and I who will be flying the flag for Thurlestone Golf Club.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
Have a great week
Steve, Lorraine, Joan and Jack
