Greetings from Steve White
Thurlestone Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

It's Masters Week!

With the weather starting to turn for the better and lighter evenings, it's great to see so many people out on the course. The forecast is set to be nice for the weekend which could lead to an entirely golf filled weekend for many of us.

An extremely important part for any golfer is the mental game. It's not just Major winners and contenders who need to have a tough mental game to play their best. Simple changes in the way that we address each hole, be it club selection or our landing zone can really start to change our ability to shoot our best scores.

By playing what is called the 'percentage' shot can really start to produce excellent and more consistent results, for example, aiming to a larger part of the green rather than as flop shot over the bunker to a tight pin. We call it the 'percentage' shot as there is a higher chance of us being able to play the shot and have the ball finish in the desired position. I'm sure all of us would all like to play extravagant flop shots 30 foot in the air, but is this always the wisest method? How many times has the shot not come out exactly as expected?

The Masters is one of the few tournaments where this is most evident. Over the course of the tournament I would encourage you to notice how many times you see a player purposely play away from the hole into a safe area of the green. With such undulation there are areas on the course that are almost impossible to play from. This doesn't always happen on or around the greens either, on many Par 4's or Par 5's you will see players consciously leaving the driver in the bag in order to put the ball in a position where they are comfortable to execute the next shot from.

So next time you're on the course, take a second to think about your course management and shot selection. Playing the percentage can really make a difference!

In order to celebrate the first Major we have a few specials in-store:

10% Off ALL Golf Bags
15% Off Sunderland Waterproofs
20% Off ALL Headwear
25% Off ALL Re-grips

This is valid for THIS WEEKEND only!

Strengthen your woods line-up by filling the gaps

When I see a golfer with a full custom-fitted set of woods in their bag, I know they have considered how far they hit each club. Often we can neglect this part of the game at the top end of our bag which costs us valuable shots. Some simple fine-tuning in this area can work wonders.
