The PGA Tour took to Memphis, Tennessee over the weekend for the annual FedEx St. Jude Championship. Many of the world’s best players posted some low and exciting scores around TPC Southwind, with Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama taking the title with an overall 17-under-par.
The leaderboard was packed with big names heading into the final round, including the defending champion Viktor Hovland. Matsuyama held the lead ahead of the Sunday by one stroke, and was feeling the pressure as he headed into his final 9 holes.
After a birdie on the 11th, he would proceed to drop 4 shots over the course of 4 holes, giving Hovland an opening to take the lead. Matsuyama regained his composure however and made birdies on the final two holes, taking back the lead and finishing 2 strokes clear of Hovland.
Having very recently won an Olympic medal in Paris, Matsuyama was elated to have added another triumph to this season’s accomplishments “I’m especially happy to be able to win one of the FedEx series tournaments. I’ve tried hard for 10 years, and it’s a great feeling of satisfaction to be able to have done it.”
Both Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele continue to be in incredible form having both finished within the top 5. Matsuyama, the now World No.6 golfer has had a steady season himself. Besides his Olympic success, he won the Genesis Invitational back in February and has carded 6 top-10 finishes.
